Reserves

The Reserve and E-reserve collections provide access to course-related materials that are required or recommended by instructors. Reserve materials are available during all open hours through the Circulation Desk of each UWSP library. E-reserve materials are available online through Canvas.

Reserve checkout periods and fines and fees are available online. Reserve materials may generally be renewed one time.

Resources for Faculty

Place Items on Reserve/E-Reserve

  • The following items may be placed on reserve:
    • books, videos, and CDs from any UWSP library
    • personal copies of books, videos, and CDs, and sample papers and tests
  • Items obtained via UW Resource Sharing or Interlibrary Loan are not candidates for Reserve
  • Please contact your library if an item you need for reserve is not available through the collection of the UWSP Libraries

Physical items can have loan periods of: 3 hours, 1 day, 3 days, or 7 days. These materials will be shelved in the Reserve collection in CCC 130.

Candidates for e-reserve content:

  • Short excerpts (10%) or a single chapter from a book
  • Individual journal, magazine, or newspaper articles to which UWSP has access
  • Instructor-generated materials
  • Music and classroom lectures in MP3 or MP4 format
  • Links to journals, articles, videos, or eBooks available through the databases of the UWSP Libraries
  • Hyperlinks to existing web pages
  • Links to streaming video from the subscriptions of the UWSP Libraries
    • Contact the Reserve Department directly with requests for other streaming video

Availability of e-reserve items and copyright considerations vary from item to item, so please get in touch with us so we can go through your requests and figure out how to best fulfill them.

Once e-reserves are available they will be posted to Canvas in the course you indicate.

Sending Us Your Request

Instructors may submit course syllabi or reading lists to the Reserve department prior to the beginning of the semester. Reserve staff will retrieve library-owned items for you.

When emailing a request, please be sure to include any and all pertinent information such as:

  • item name(s)
  • author names
  • date of creation
  • publisher loan period desired for physical reserves
  • page ranges/selections to be scanned
  • date items are needed by

Purchase Request Form for Items to Add to Reserves

General limits on purchasing for Reserves:

  • Whenever possible, unlimited access ebooks are preferred over multiple print copies
  • We will add 1 copy for every 15 students enrolled
  • The Libraries will charge-back the department for 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc., copies
  • Reserve funds will purchase ebooks or the 1st, 3rd,  5th, etc., copies

Statement on Copyright and Reserves

The UWSP Libraries abide by the United States Copyright Act of 1976, as well as the fair-use provisions of Section 107 regarding the making of copies for classroom use. We use four factors in determining fair use:

  1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit education purposes
  2. The nature of the copyrighted work
  3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
  4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work

The reserves of the UWSP Libraries provide access to supplementary course materials in support of the university's academic mission, and access to the system is limited to UWSP faculty and to UWSP students actively enrolled in courses.
