SDPI - Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we need to worry about protecting Social Security Numbers?

Your Social Security Number can be used to get other personal information for the purpose of credit card fraud, malicious impersonations, loan fraud and a host of other crimes.  Social Security Number identity theft is the largest and fastest growing problem in the United States.

What steps is the University planning to take to address SSN use?

One of the objectives of the SDPI is to remove the use of SSN.  The SSN is being replaced with the University Person ID as an employee's or student's primary identification number.

What can our department use instead of SSNs?

The University Person ID number is the best replacement.

Are University ID numbers public information?

Although University Person ID numbers are not, strictly speaking, confidential, they should not be handled casually, and, particularly when used or stored in large quantities, should be well-protected.

What can individual faculty members do concerning their use of SSNs?

How do I know what my University Person ID is?

Your University Person ID is your unique identification number.  The nine digit Person ID is the primary number associated with your identity at the University for all students and employees. This number appears on your University ID card. If you don't have a University ID card, you can get one at the Point Card Office.
