Office Space Heater Safety

The colder months in Wisconsin can provide challenges at times for building heating and comfort.  The use of space heaters to provide additional heat for comfort can be an option if used correctly.  However, if space heaters are improperly used they can cause injury due to fire, electrical shock, and/or carbon monoxide poisoning.

UW Systems policy states that appropriate adjustment of the building heating system should always be the preferred option for meeting the heating needs of employees, students, and guests in UW System buildings. When this is infeasible, campuses shall have the authority to approve the use of certain space heaters in limited situations, such as where target temperatures cannot be maintained, for specific health needs, or for other extenuating circumstances.

Prior to using a space heater, the following steps must be taken.

  1. Contact facilities to review building heating system is working properly in your area.
  2. Obtain approval from your supervisor for the proper use of a space heater in your area.  (Other policies may not allow for space heater usage, ie. Lab Safety

The following will provide guidance on purchasing and use requirements.

  1. The space heater must be UL or FM labeled by the manufacturer.
  2. Only electric space heaters may be used.
  3. Portable space heaters used shall be limited to devices where the heating element is limited to not more than 212°F (100°C).
  4. Devices must be equipped with a safety "tip-over" switch which disconnects power if the device tips over.
  5. Space heaters must never be left powered on unattended, even if you are just going to step out for a moment.
  6. Space heaters should be unplugged when not in use.
  7. A minimum of 36" should be maintained from any combustible materials.
  8. Adequate space should be provided around space heaters to allow for air circulation.
  9. Space heaters should be plugged directly into wall receptacles and not into power strips.
  10. Frequent inspections of electrical cords for damage and to ensure a tight connection of the cord to the receptacle
  11. If the heater begins to spark or produce an electrical smell, turn the power off immediately and discontinue using the appliance.
