The Facility Services Maintenance Work Unit is incorporating the use of ZERO VOC paints. Most conventional paints contain and emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Some types of VOCs contribute to smog, and many VOCs are emitted indoors and contribute to indoor air pollution. By utilizing ZERO VOC paint, the Maintenance Work Unit is helping to keep our building spaces healthier. The Maintenance Work Unit's painters also remove the labels from empty paint cans and place the cans in a metal bin so that they too can be recycled.

The Maintenance Work Unit has increased their efforts to collect recycled waste materials from job sites. This is an innovative way to conserve resources. Because of the Maintenance staff’s recycling efforts, used materials are converted into new products, reducing the need to consume natural resources.

The Maintenance Work Unit continues to switch standard bulbs to LED lights whenever possible. Widespread use of LED lighting has the greatest potential impact on energy savings in the United States. By 2027, widespread use of LEDs could save the equivalent annual electrical output of 44 large electric power plants (1000 megawatts each), and a total savings of more than $30 billion at today's electricity prices.

Motion activated light switches have been installed throughout the UWSP campus. By automatically turning off, they provide a great way to prevent wasted electricity and help conserve energy resources.
