Bias/Hate Incident Reporting
What is a Bias Incident?
A bias/hate incident is an act of conduct, speech, or expression to which a bias motive is evident as a contributing factor (regardless of whether the act is criminal).
What is a Hate Crime?
A criminal offense committed against a person which is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender’s bias against race, religion, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity, ethnicity, national origin, or disability. A hate crime is a bias incident that has risen to the level of a crime. All hate crimes are hate incidents, but not all incidents are crimes.
Hate crimes, per the Clery Act, can include any of the following offenses that are motivated by bias: 1) Murder and non-negligent manslaughter, 2) sexual assault, 3) robbery, 4) aggravated assault, 5) motor vehicle theft, 6) arson, 7) larceny-theft, 8) simple assault, 9) intimidation, or 10) destruction, damage, vandalism of property.
Who can report an incident or suspected crime?
Any person aware of an incident, including the person at whom the behavior was directed, a friend, or advocate, or a witness.
Reporting Process
If the bias incident or crime is in progress or just occurred and someone has been injured or is in danger: ALWAYS CALL 911 OR UNIVERSITY POLICE (715) 346-3456 IMMEDIATELY.
A bias incident can be reported as follows:
- At any time the online incident reporting form is available to file a bias incident report (link below).
- During business hours, contact a member of the Diversity and College Access staff.
- During business hours, contact a member of the UW-Stevens Point Hate/Bias Response Team.
- During business hours, contact the Office of the Dean of Students, 8am to 4:30pm (715-346-2611), 212 Old Main.
BIAS INCIDENT / HATE CRIME INCIDENT REPORT FORM
After a report is filed, the UW-Stevens Point Hate/Bias Response Team will review the report and determine an appropriate course of action.
