Details

A two-day summer institute featuring dynamic, hands-on professional development (PD) sessions in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS). 30-minute breakout sessions on topics including: Active Learning Strategies, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Personal Financial Literacy, FCCLA, RealityWorks Simulators and Curriculum Kits, Standards and Career Pathways. Additional opportunities to practice and learn about lab management in the textiles and culinary arts space will also be available.​​

PDUs available towards CFCS! 

​​​​Who Should Attend: Designed primarily for experience-based licensed teachers, new teachers, and postsecondary students entering the profession. Professionals seeking PD in FCS are also welcome.​​​

Building Bridges: Strengthening Soft Skills in the Middle School Classroom

Explore the purpose behind your teaching and how your coursework prepares students for family, career, and community life. Part 1 of this interactive session will guide Family and Consumer Sciences educators through connecting their courses to career clusters and embedding career ready practices into FCS courses. ​


The Incredible Edible Egg

Presenter: Tammie Law, Family and Consumer Sciences Educator, FCCLA Adviser, Senior Class Adviser, Prom Adviser, Wisconsin Virtual School Local Education Guide Prairie Farm School District

Did you sing the tune as you read those words? The American Egg Board is responsible for those ads and has many resources for teachers to use in the classroom. Eggs are a versatile ingredient that have a million and one uses, preparation techniques and functions to explore in foods labs at all levels.  In this session we will explore resources, lab expectations and set up methods that will help you set up your students for success at every level.  We will discuss a few of the many egg-centric lab opportunities that eggs present to meet the needs of the very basic to advanced culinary classroom.  Join us as we make individual custom omelets and explore the multitude of classroom and lab applications of the Incredible Edible Egg.


Open Evening Skills Work

During this open session, you have the flexibility to engage in activities that best support your professional growth. Take advantage of the Family and Consumer Sciences lab spaces at UW-Stevens Point, including the Textiles Lab, Culinary Lab, and RealityWorks Simulators and Curriculum Kits. Use this time to network with fellow educators, collaborate on lesson planning, align curriculum to standards, or explore new teaching tools and resources. Whether you're looking for hands-on experience, meaningful discussions, or dedicated planning time, this session allows you to make the most of your FCS learning experience.​



Wednesday - July 30th

Supporting Early Literacy in Your MS/HS Classroom

Presenter: Ashley King, Family and Consumer Sciences Education and FCCLA Chapter Adviser 

Partnering Organization: Wisconsin FCCLA

1000 books before kindergarten is a goal often given to families, as a way to encourage the child's development. A barrier for some caregivers is a lack of confidence in being good at reading aloud. In this session I will walk you through how I teach 7th graders on how to select a good read aloud and start to build skills to give them confidence as a reader. This project then provides a direct connection to the FCCLA STAR events project, Children's Literature.

Part 2 of this interactive session will provide Family and Consumer Sciences educators the opportunity to map the big picture of their course offerings and program at their school. The FCS Program Mapping Tool will be introduced as a way to support PLC, SLO and professional growth within their program. ​​

Spaghetti & Science: Teaching Brain Development through Play

Presenter: Erica Berndt, Early Childhood Education Instructor

In this fun, hands-on works​hop, you'll discover how to make complex brain development concepts simple and engaging for high school students. Through immersive exercises, you’ll learn practical ways to show future teachers how children's brains grow and develop. This is perfect for anyone teaching child development or early education classes!​

Refunds will be granted if the Continuing Education and Outreach office is contacted at least seven (7) days before the start of a class. No refunds will be given with less than seven (7) days notice. Programs that involve pre-ordering of materials and/or travel will not qualify for a refund unless your space can be filled from a waiting list. We reserve the right to cancel a course due to low enrollment, severe weather, or instructor illness. A full refund will be issued under these circumstances.
