Lee the General Grant at Appomattox, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theater in Washington by southern patriot and actor, John Wilkes Booth. Although Lincoln's popularity as a war-time president had not been strong and his election to a second term the previous November was determined by fewer than 500,000 votes, the national outpouring of grief that followed this first assassination of the United States president was tremendous.
