Gerald Stevens, in Canadian Glass: c.1825-1925, writes that Excelsior Glass Company, “provided the collector of Canadian glass with one item which is becoming a 'must,' and that is the well-known 'Beaver' goblet.” Stevens accounts for the popularity of the goblet in Canada by noting the National Appeal of its two predominating motifs---a band of six beavers below the rim and three large maple leaves around the lower portion of the bowl. He also describes the unique mark appearing on the underside of the foot, which reads, “St. Jean Baptiste, Quebec, 24 Juin [June], 1880.” Questions of origin notwithstanding, BEAVER BAND is highly esteemed by Canadian and American collectors alike.
