Ruth Webb Lee wrote, in 1933, that "from the beginning of the interest in American pressed glass there has been much speculation as the the date, orgin and meaning of the trio of countenances in the pattern known as THREE FACE. Many legends, all apocryphal, circulated for years. For example, there was the tale of the beautifal member of a well-known Philadelphia family who ordered a portrait from a distinguished artist, but was told that her extraordinary beauty could only be captured with three likenesses - full-face, profile, and fifty-fifty. Getting three commissions at once was not only high art byut high finance. Classical students called the ware the Three Graces. However, Aglaia has exactly the same face as Euphrosyne, and Thalia is a dead ringer of her sisters. Other stories circulated. Many well-meaning souls contented that the THREE FACE was a Sandwich product, though wothout any corroborative evidence other than the desire to call everything in pressed glass Sandwich (the Duncan Trio, Antiques, April 1933).
