Visitor Services/Gift Shop Staff
Visitor Services staff create a welcoming, safe, and memorable experience for visitors to Schmeeckle Reserve. Their primary duty is to greet visitors and provide them with information. Staff must be positive, friendly, and outgoing.
Employees also are responsible for selling items in the gift shop, a store specializing in natural and cultural merchandise.
Specific duties include:
Staffing the information desk of the Schmeeckle visitor center
Providing information about Schmeeckle Reserve, the Green Circle Trail, the university, and the Stevens Point Area to visitors
Opening and closing the visitor center building.
Selling merchandise and organizing the gift shop (cash register operation and credit card sales)
Setting up the meeting room for rental groups and being a positive host
Basic office work as assigned (answering phones, receiving messages, making copies, collating booklets, etc.)
Basic facility cleaning work (restrooms, vacuuming, dusting, disinfecting surfaces, cleaning windows, etc.
Trails and Facilities Crew Members
Trails and Facilities staff are part of a team that supports the general maintenance and upkeep of Schmeeckle Reserve, including trail work, landscape management, facility maintenance, and woodworking.
Specific duties include:
Trail and boardwalk upkeep (trail surfacing, hazard removal, construction and repair of boardwalks, bridges, and benches)
Landscape management (habitat restoration, vegetation planting, mowing, litter pickup)
Cedar sign and bench construction (joining boards, routing, dremeling, painting, staining)
Facility maintenance (custodial, snow removal, repairs)
General labor as needed.
Artists/Painters/Carvers
Artist staff create unique artwork for cedar signs, benches, and other program revenue operations that support the work of Schmeeckle Reserve. Artists will primarily be painting realistic wildlife, plants, and landscapes for customers.
Specific duties include:
- Painting: Paint detailed, realistic wildlife, plants, and habitats on cedar signs.
- Carving: Route, carve, and sculpt realistic natural scenes into wood.
- Illustration: Create sketches and illustrations of natural and cultural history topics for signs, publications, merchandise, marketing, and other media.
- Maintenance: This position will also help with some maintenance duties, depending on current projects.
