Join Healthy Lakes team members to learn about the statewide Healthy Lakes initiative. We will share Wisconsin's 2014-2017 Healthy Lakes Implementation Plan, the five best practices described within it, and funding options. There will be plenty of time for questions, and participants will help shape this exciting new initiative's future direction. This workshop is intended for lake leaders and partners interested in doing Healthy Lakes projects and professionals positioned to promote and support them.

Healthy Lakes team members and “founders”
Are you a new member of a Lake District Board of Commissioners? Maybe your lake district recently formed. This workshop is meant to walk you through the basics of Wisconsin’s unique lake districts and the important roles that elected and appointed commissioners play in making them work. We’ll cover the basics of Chapter 33, the state statute that governs lake districts, and other relevant rules and laws that every commissioner should know.

Volunteers are an integral part of our Lakes Partnership and many local agencies and organizations count on volunteers to make specific projects successful. However, few people are trained in the fine art and science of volunteer coordination. This workshop will provide participants with best leadership practices and practical advice for recruiting, orienting, engaging, and recognizing volunteers. In viewing volunteers as assets, you will be a more effective and efficient project manager.

Learn how to tell your story through video, still photos, music and voice recordings. Digital storytelling can be as simple or complex as you want it and can be used to tell a powerful story with more than just words. This workshop will provide you with concrete processes to create your own stories. Please bring a story idea, your own computer and a flash drive containing photos and video that you'd like to use. Most cameras and smart phones will take usable video.

WordPress is a very popular website builder that does not require coding skills but still allows organizations to customize their site to meet their communication goals. This workshop will utilize a WordPress multisite system which runs a collection of separate and distinct lake organization sites. The multisite approach minimizes site hosting expenses and greatly simplifies administration tasks for the lake organization. During this workshop, participants will work to adapt a site template (see
lakekit.net) to their lake organization. Participants will need to provide their own laptop or tablet with wireless internet capability as they will be creating and editing webpages throughout this hands-on workshop. Prior to the workshop, participants will receive some preparation tasks from the workshop educator to help them use their time most effectively. Registration in the workshop will provide the organization with 2016 website hosting.

Manual removal strategies have been utilized to drastically reduce and even eliminate Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) (
Myriophyllum spicatum) from many central Wisconsin lakes. Proper preparation and identification are crucial for a manual removal program to be successful. When conducted properly and employed early, manual removal can be a highly effective, low-cost strategy with minimal negative impacts to the native aquatic plant community. This workshop will discuss identification of EWM and similar species, as well as mapping, removal, and disposal. Above-water and underwater video footage will be shown to illustrate the removal process. Scuba diving and DASH (Diver Assisted Suction Harvesting) will also be covered for lakes with deeper or more advanced milfoil populations. A pontoon boat outfitted for DASH operation will be on location as part of the presentation. Attendees may wish to view the tutorial video before attending, and bring questions for the presenters.
