Harmful Algal Blooms in Wisconsin Waters 2009-2012

Please join us for a presentation regarding cyanobacteria (or blue-green algae) in Wisconsin’s recreational waters. This session will feature presentations from Gina LaLiberte, from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Emmy Wollenburg, from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Ms. LaLiberte will provide information about the origins of cyanobacteria in freshwater ecosystems, ecology of various algae species, information about toxin-producing species and conditions that promote harmful algal blooms. Ms. Wollenburg will address the health hazard posed by cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins. Presenters will also provide an overview of their current program to conduct surveillance of algae-related health issues. This session will give attendees an opportunity to learn more about harmful algal blooms in Wisconsin lakes.

Aquatic Plant Management Permitting

Tuesday, 4:45-5:45 pm

Carroll Schaal and Scott Provost will discuss what’s on the horizon in the Aquatic Plant Management Program. Topics will include new permitting process and requirements, improved management methods and tools for AIS control and lake restoration. A short presentation will provide an overview followed by an open discussion where audience participation is encouraged. Other technical experts will be on hand to help answer questions and get you thinking about the future of aquatic plant management in Wisconsin.

 

 

QA & QC for CLMN

Tuesday, 4:45-5:45 pm

If you are a CLMN chemistry volunteer (or are curious what they do) you are invited to attend a refresher workshop at the Lakes Convention at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay. The workshop is an opportunity to review monitoring protocols, meet your CLMN Coordinator and other volunteers and pick up spring samplings supplies. CLMN Coordinators will be on hand to get you ready for the upcoming field season and brush up sample collection. We will also review the strategy for the CLMN quality assurance program and discuss how it is going and what we are learning from the volunteers. If you wish to attend the workshop or if you would like to pick up your spring sampling supplies, please contact Sandy Wickman at 715-365-8951 or by email at sandra.wickman@wisconsin.gov. If you need replacement equipment, please be sure to let Sandy know so it will be ready for you to pick up.

 

Inspection, Operations and Maintenance Plans for Dam Owners: A Guide and Template

Lake Associations are frequently dam owners as well as lake managers. They are often unaware of or confused about the regulations and responsibilities of dam ownership. The WDNR presentation will focus on the Dam Safety's new Inspection, Operation and Maintenance Plan Guide and Template. All dam owners should have an IOM plan to assist the owner/operator in operating and maintaining the dam in a safe manner. The presentation will include a review of the current inspection program as well as an explanation on using the Guide/Template to write an IOM.

 

 

CoCoRaHS: Because Every Drop Counts

Rain and snowfall amounts can vary widely from location to location. Meteorologists and researchers depend on supplemental reports to fill in any localized events and precipitation gaps in data. Volunteer precipitation observers help fill in data-gaps as part of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network, also known as CoCoRaHS. Ashley Wolf, Meteorologist and CoCoRaHS program leader for Northeast Wisconsin, will present information on the history and importance of the CoCoRaHS program, provide steps on signing up and placing your precipitation equipment, as well as provide training on how take accurate rain and snowfall measurements. By the end of the presentation, you will have all the training necessary to become a CoCoRaHS observer! You don't need to be a scientist to join, anyone can be part of the CoCoRaHS initiative who has 5 minutes every morning and an enthusiasm for weather. After the talk, our hope is that you will walk away with confidence knowing that you are now equipped to make good precipitation observations that can benefit many.
