The Lac Courte Oreilles Lake Association (COLA) Experience
Wednesday 1:45-2:25 pm
Citizen involvement has been very effective in preserving and enhancing the water quality of our lake. We will describe in detail three elements that have been crucial to our success: 1.) a very dedicated and involved lake association, 2.) the creation of a non-profit 501 c 3 foundation, and 3.) because half of our lake is within tribal lands, a partnership with the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation Land Conservation Department.

Empowering Citizens to Address the Sale of Invasive Species
Wednesday 1:45-2:25 pm
Invasive plants and animals continue to be sold despite the adoption of NR 40, Wisconsin's new Invasive Species Identification, Classification and Control Rule. Both traditional and non-traditional sales outlets have sold aquatic and wetland species that are regulated in Wisconsin. Education is the key to preventing the sale of invasive species, but it's more complicated than handing business owners a list of regulated plants. This presentation will address how any individual can approach the issue of sales of invasive species in a manner that encourages voluntary compliance with state regulations.
Presenter: Diane Schauer, Calumet County Planning, Zoning, & Land Information Department

Presque Isle Wilderness Waters Program
Wednesday 1:45-2:25 pm
Since 2005, the Presque Isle Town Lakes Committee has overseen aquatic plant surveys on 24 area lakes and have another 7 slated for 2011. The Committee sensed that the fragmented approach to their lake studies went against their view that the landscape was connected and thus their lake management approach needed to be also. The Wilderness Waters program emerged from that philosophy. Participants will be informed about this comprehensive approach to lake management and the various components of the current program.
Presenters: Dr. Dean Premo, White Water Associates, Inc. & Otto Novak, Presque Isle Town Lakes Committee
A Sense of Wonder
Wednesday 1:45-2:25 pm
When pioneering environmentalist Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1962, the backlash from her critics forced her into the role of controversial public figure. Using many of Miss Carson's own words, Kaiulani Lee embodies this woman in a documentary style film which depicts Carson in the final year of her life. Sense the wonder of science through Lee's acting and Carson's writings.
