Music Ensembles


If music is your love, start your education at the UW-Stevens Point at Wausau. The musical life is alive and vibrant. You can join vocal and instrumental ensembles that perform jazz, classical, and popular music.

For students planning to major in music, the program at UW-Stevens Point at Wausau provides an excellent beginning to your musical studies, with core music courses that make up the first two years of any music degree. Incoming students are encouraged to sign up for a Scholarship Audition.

​ We offer five Music Ensembles at UW-Stevens Point at Wausau that are open to ALL students.

 Concert Band

Directed by Patrick Phalen
Rehearsal times: Wednesdays 6:30 - 8:10 p.m.

The UW-Stevens Point at Wausau Concert Band is a community-university blend, including current and former UW-Stevens Point at Wausau students as well as other musicians from the Wausau area. Numerous generations and levels of experience provide an outstanding opportunity for credit students to perform with members having as many as 50+ years of performing.

The Concert Band performs in four concerts each year, with a “Preview” performance in October featuring the entire music program, a shared performance with the UW-Stevens Point at Wausau Jazz Ensemble in December, a full concert in early spring and a shared performance with the UW-Stevens Point at Wausau Concert Choir in May.

Music is selected for its musical value and variety, often highlighting classic band works from the last century. Every even year, the band's early spring concert features music related to the dance, from ballet to Broadway to ballroom.

 Concert Choir

Rehearsal times: Mondays and Wednesdays 12- 1:15 p.m.

The UW-Stevens Point at Wausau Concert Choir is the largest choral ensemble at the college. It is open to ALL students with choir experience. If you have never sung in a choir, please send an email to timothy.buchholz@uwsp.edu to set up a minimal audition.

Concert Choir gives multiple on-campus performances each year, including a Fall Preview concert in October, which features all five of the college’s ensembles, a Winter Choral Concert in December featuring the school’s three vocal ensembles, and a Mother’s Day Concert in May. These three performances are held at the state-of-the-art UW Center for Civic Engagement Theater on the UW-Stevens Point at Wausau campus.

 Jazz Ensemble

Rehearsal times: Tuesdays 6 - 7:40 p.m.

The UW-Stevens Point at Wausau Jazz Ensemble provides a creative musical outlet for all interested university students interested in performing big band music. Members have the opportunity to learn a variety of jazz, Latin and jazz-rock styles through the jazz ensemble literature, while continuing to develop individual and ensemble musical skills.

Additionally, the course is an important part of the curriculum for music majors and allows these students to apply and reinforce what they are learning in their other coursework. The group performs on campus at least twice each semester, with occasional off-campus performances for festivals, community events or joint concerts with public school groups. No audition is necessary for students with prior experience at the high school-level. Other interested students should contact the instructor.

 Vocal Jazz Ensemble

Rehearsal times: Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:30 - 2:45 p.m.

The UW-Stevens Point at Wausau Vocal Jazz Ensemble is one of two select vocal jazz ensembles at UW-Stevens Point at Wausau. This group of 12-16 singers performs a wide variety of jazz and popular music, and is open to all college students by audition.

UW-Stevens Point at Wausau Vocal Jazz Ensemble gives four on-campus performances each year, including a Fall Preview concert in October, which features all five of the college’s ensembles, a Winter Choral Concert in December featuring the school’s three vocal ensembles, a UW-Stevens Point at Wausau Vocal Jazz Festival performance in April, and a Spring Jazz Concert performance in May featuring all three jazz groups plus the Central Wisconsin High School Honors Vocal Jazz Ensemble.  These four performances are held at the state-of-the-art UW Center for Civic Engagement Theater on the UW-Stevens Point at Wausau campus.  Additionally, Vocal Jazz Ensemble gives multiple performances throughout central Wisconsin, including exchanges with local high school choirs.

Central Wisconsin's ONLY Community Vocal Jazz Ensemble

Rehearsal times: Mondays 7 - 9 p.m. during the academic year

UW-Stevens Point at Wausau Jazz Central Voices is a select community vocal jazz ensemble at UW-Stevens Point at Wausau. The group consists of community members from central Wisconsin and beyond, including music educators, current music majors, and other professionals with strong backgrounds in music. The ensemble's repertoire includes classic big band era swing tunes, a cappella arrangements of jazz standards, and modern vocal jazz compositions.

Founded in 2012, Jazz Central Voices gives numerous performances each year throughout Wisconsin, at local and regional jazz festivals, and at UW-Stevens Point at Wausau's state-of-the-art UW Center for Civic Engagement Theater.
