We offer two different degree tracks in Art, a BA and a BFA.

Our BFA in Art is called the Integrative Studio Arts degree because it allows you to integrate classes in multiple disciplines. This professional degree requires 78 credits within the major, yet it is all about the creative direction YOU want to take. To start with you take a solid core of art studios and then get to choose classes that pique your interest—such as performance, lighting or costume design, video, or sound production. If you want to spend every waking hour in the painting studio, building sculpture, throwing pots, or making prints, this program allows for that too.

Our BA in Art is a great degree for the student who loves to be creative but doesn't see themselves necessarily working as an artist. This program consists of 48 credits within the major and can easily combine with another major such as Arts Management, Biology, Business, Communication, or Psychology, allowing you to pursue your professional interests while staying connected and growing your creative talents. Alternately, you can pair the BA in Art with multiple Minors such as Communication, Dance, Environmental Education, Museum Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, or Web Development to name a few.

Career opportunities in Art

Creative professionals are highly valued employees in every business and organization. Our graduates find employment in commercial enterprises, private firms, government agencies or work in educational institutions. Some choose the entrepreneurial path, becoming self-employed professional artists, or decide to go on to graduate school.

Some job titles in art-related fields include:

  • Art Program Director
  • Gallery Director
  • Museum Curator
  • Photographer
  • Illustrator
  • Exhibiting Artist
  • Studio Assistant
  • Concept Artist
  • Crafts Instructor
  • Art Educator

Art Minors

Our Minor in Studio Art is a great way for you to dip a toe in the creative waters. At only 21 credits you can take the Art Minor and add other Minors to it. If you like the Art experience you are having, you can easily grow the Minor into a BA because all of the entry courses are the same. Enjoy the connection to your creativity with the Minor in Studio Art as a nice place to go while you focus on your other studies.

Our Minor in Art History is very easy to add to any of our degree tracks. Whatever your aspirations are, knowledge of Art History helps you see the world more richly. Our dedicated faculty in this area are passionate about helping students understand the power of visual culture, globally, throughout history, and in our world today. If you are thrilled by Art History, and motivated, they can assist you in navigating your way to further study in graduate programs.

Gain Experience Outside the Classroom

  • Exhibition Opportunities / Competitions
Art and Design hosts the annual Juried Student Exhibition where students at all levels can enter work and have the chance to win awards. Each year we also hold a Scholarship Competition with multiple awards given to excellence in each discipline, in leadership and service. Students get calls to enter local, regional, national and international art shows.

  • Public Art / Community Work
The Carlsten Gallery Student Advisory Committee (CGSAC) holds an annual competition for students to create Public Artwork. Students gain experience with proposal writing, presentations, and working with a faculty mentor.

  • Visiting Artists / Workshops
Every year we host different visiting artists who hold workshops and give lectures on campus. Student groups sponsor events and individuals also travel to attend talks or weekend workshops.
