Mathematical Sciences nurtures logic, intellect at UW-Stevens Point

Mathematics is the language of nature. It helps the physical sciences view and explain the world. Math answers problems in medicine, economics, management, geography, chemistry, government, engineering, physics and computer science. It is the artistic expression of intellect and is limited only by one's imagination, logic and creativity.

No matter how it’s viewed, math has something for everyone. Plus, math is fun! Learn about the world around you through the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Mathematics: A diverse endeavor

Mathematical Sciences offers majors or minors in mathematics, mathematics education, and applied mathematics, and a major with emphasis in actuarial science. The math department has about 20 faculty members and roughly 140 majors. Special faculty areas of research and instructional interest include actuarial science, operations research, probability, statistics, secondary education and several areas of topology and analysis.

Mathematical Sciences strives to:

  • educate and train future and current elementary, middle and high schools math teachers;
  • instruct students from all majors in math;
  • train students for careers related to actuarial science;
  • encourage students to continue their educations in professional or academic disciplines related to math.

Post-graduate opportunities in math

A Bachelor of Science degree in the mathematical sciences can prepare students for jobs in statistics, logistics, actuarial science, mathematical modeling and education. UW-Stevens Point mathematics graduates have enjoyed careers in insurance, banking, financial services, government, education, software publishing, consulting, e-commerce, health care and law.
