Knowledge and skills in sustainable food systems and community development are increasingly essential to solving the health and nutrition problems in our populations. Professionals entering this field must be skilled in examining the food system, program planning and evaluation, community development, and leadership, and grant writing.

The Master of Science in Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point provides graduates with expertise in food systems and community nutrition as well as the skills needed to lead positive change in communities and organizations. The remaining 3 elective credits are chosen by the student to meet their unique career goals. Elective courses can be taken at UWSP or transferred in from another institution. The 30-credit program can be completed in 18 months and the 100% online format can accommodate working students.

Sustainability is a pillar of our culture at UW-Stevens Point. In fact, UWSP was one of nine universities in the country to be name a 2017 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School.

Who is the program designed for?

ProfileAnyone with a passion for building community relationships and structures that support healthy eating is encouraged to join us! Our students come to us with a wide variety of experiences and undergraduate degrees including nutrition, economics, communication and others.
  • Students interested in pursuing careers in community nutrition; public health; government; academic institutions; or other areas in which knowledge and skills in leadership and sustainability are essential

  • Professionals currently working in community health and development settings who wish to gain expertise in food, nutrition and sustainability
  • Registered Dietitians or other professionals may use the degree for career enhancement or professional development related to helping communities solve their food and nutrition problems

Where do graduates work?

With your master's degree from UW-Stevens Point in sustainable and resilient food systems, you will develop skills to:
  • support market structures that ensure access to safe, affordable, culturally appropriate and healthy food that meets current nutrition needs without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same
  • promote fair working conditions and wages for producers and workers along the food chain
  • minimize harmful environmental and health impacts of food production and distribution; including reduction of water usage, greenhouse gas emissions, synthetic fertilizer and pesticide applications and food waste
  • empower communities to build resources and capacity to reach their sustainable food system goals and enhance food security (resiliency)
  • advocate for food and agricultural policies that promote the production and consumption of healthy and sustainable foods
  • develop programs that enable individuals to adopt healthy eating behaviors where they live, work, learn and play.
Our master's degree program will open doors to a wide variety of careers in:
  • Federal agencies that create national nutrition and health policy (CDC, FDA, USDA)
  • State and local agencies (Wisconsin Dept. of Health, Supplemental Food Programs, Dept. of Agriculture)

  • Urban planning and development, community development corporations (supermarket development, new farm enterprises)
