K-12 Aquaculture and Aquaponics

The UWSP-NADF has been working
collaboratively for many years with Ashland, Bayfield and Washburn Schools to develop
Aquaculture/Aquaponics Programs for many different grade levels. The UWSP-NADF
staff provides technical assistance, supplies, and fish to assist the dedicated
teachers that are introducing
aquaculture and aquaponics to
the next generation of aquaculturists. Pictures show students from Bayfield School (above) and Washburn school (below) with their aquaponics systems. The facility also interacts with schools across Wisconsin regarding aquaculture literacy, technical assistance for thier aquaculture systems, and offering of interactive facility tours for students and educators.

UWSP-NADF has collaborated with the Bayfield County Economic Development Corporation (BCEDC) and UW-Extension as well as local school districts to help support aquaponics and aquaculture education. Donations have been awarded to both Bayfield and Washburn schools by BCEDC which is a starting point to future funding from grants and organizations for the schools. Grants will be able to fund the schools in terms of equipment, curriculum enhancement, travel for tours of both UWSP-NADF and UWSP-Aquaponics Innovation Center as well as further education in internships, workshops or hands on training.
