Adapting to Climate Change in the Northwoods of Wisconsin

February 13, 2020

4 p.m. in Room 170, Trainer Natural Resources Building, UWSP campus, Stevens Point, WI

with Linda Parker
Forest Ecologist on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest
United States Forest Service

Several years ago, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest worked with research partners to pioneer an approach to Climate Change adaptation. The Climate Change Response Framework is now used throughout the Eastern Region of the United States, and beyond. Under this framework, the Forest first assessed the vulnerability of our major ecosystem types. Then they use a menu of adaptation practices to make those ecosystems more resilient. Several years ago, anticipating an increase in extreme precipitation events, they applied this framework to the forested watersheds in the Penokee Range, the headwaters of Lake Superior. This presentation will tell the story of how their efforts were put to the test during the historic storms of 2016 and 2018.

Linda Parker has been the Forest Ecologist on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF) since 1991. A native of Virginia, she holds a Master of Science Degree in Zoology (Ecology) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. She has served as the Forest’s Climate Change Coordinator since 2008. In addition to Forest Ecology, Linda is also responsible for managing the Botany, Non-native Invasive Species, and Natural Areas programs on the CNNF. She is also a member of an Incident Management Team and has had numerous wildland fire assignments throughout the United States.
