Local Civil Rights Groundbreaker Remembers Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Barbara Hickman remembers her days spent in Beloit more than 50 years ago. She recalls a much different time period.

"I did not even have an opportunity to sit down and eat in a restaurant," Hickman said. "I was not offered a lot of scholarships."
 
She came to UW-Stevens Point in the late 1950s. After graduating as the first female African American student from the college in 1960, she became a teacher; to make a difference in students' lives...
 
At Stevens Point Area Senior High School on Monday, she tried to make a difference again-by honoring Dr, King's legacy to promote equality.
