Meet the Rodents Making Global Warming Worse

You can add squirrels and beavers to the list of animal species that are contributing to climate change, according to a pair of recently released studies that show how wildlife, too, is making global warming worse.

The first of the two studies, titled Consequences of Arctic Ground Squirrels on Soil Carbon Loss from Siberian Tundra and published at the mid-December meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, shows how the behavior of these 15-inch-long rodents is releasing large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere....

..."We saw an increase in soil temperature in the soils where the Arctic ground squirrels were occupying," Nigel Golden, a research technician at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and another of the study's co-authors, told BBC.com.​
