Officials from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point say the need for space to grow existing health care programs, as well as add new offerings for students, is behind a proposal to lease the former Mid-State Technical College.

The Stevens Point City Council on Monday approved the development of a 10-year lease agreement with UWSP for the city-owned, 36,000-square-foot building at 933 Michigan Ave. The university would lease the building for $100,000 annually, then would have the option to purchase the property for $1.39 million after July 1, 2017.

Marty Loy, dean of the College of Professional Studies at UWSP, said the lease agreement for the proposed facility, to be named the Center for Healthy Communities, still must be approved by the UW Board of Regents and the state’s Building Commission, which he hopes to see happen by February. From there, renovations to the MSTC building could begin in the spring or summer, with an eye toward opening in fall 2016.
