Fungus frightens bat enthusiasts

During a recent cold and wet evening, 6-year-old Emily Peterson helped her mother hang Halloween decorations from their Wisconsin Rapids porch.

"I like the ghosts and the bats because they're scary," Emily said.

But, this year, bats in Wisconsin are facing something scarier than their Halloween counterparts. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials reported last spring that a fungus that could potentially wipe out the majority of the bat population was seen in one of the state's bat caves...

...It is what experts knew was coming a long time ago to Wisconsin, said Chris Yahnke, associate professor of biology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
