UW-Stevens Point researchers continue bear hibernation study

At this point in the year, the bears of northwestern Wisconsin are snoozing through the coldest part of the winter, blissfully unaware that researchers affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point are seeking out the whereabouts of their dens as part of an ongoing research project on the state’s black bears.

It is a project that has gone on for the past 30 years, a study that hopes to learn more about the life and times of one of Wisconsin’s most magnificent creatures.

According to Tim Ginnett, an associate professor and discipline coordinator at the College of Natural Resources at UW-Stevens Point, the study seeks to collect accurate information at a time of change for bear populations in the state.
