The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is seeking high school writers for the annual Writers’ Workshop, which includes the opportunity to compete for five $1,000 university scholarships.

Central Wisconsin junior and senior students may submit writing samples to the English Department by Friday, Oct. 11, to qualify for the one-day workshop to be held Thursday, Dec. 5. Students may enter samples in one or more of five categories: formal essay on an environmental topic, familiar/personal essay, poetry, speculative fiction or short story. The samples will be judged by UW-Stevens Point English faculty members.

The workshop will include writing sessions with university faculty members and guest speakers, lunch and readings from nature writer and high school teacher Jill Sisson Quinn. Sessions are also available for teachers. The workshop will close with an awards ceremony to recognize “A” rating junior writers as well as a senior scholarship winner and five runners-up in each category.

Students must be sponsored by a high school teacher and need to include an entry form with their writing sample.  Entry forms are available on the UW-Stevens Point English Department website link for the High School Writers’ Workshop: www.uwsp.edu/english/HSWW/Documents/HSWW%20Brochure%202013.pdf

For more information, contact Professor Pat Gott, 715-346-4347, or program assistant Kelly Thompson, 715-346-4758 in the English Department. No emailed submissions will be accepted.
