Learn more about how to
make your personal and business life more sustainable during the first-ever
National Campus Sustainability Day information fair Wednesday, Oct. 23.
Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, it will be held from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Dreyfus University Center first-floor concourse. The free
fair is open to the public.
Businesses, nonprofit
organizations and student groups will provide information about products,
processes or practices to make workplaces, homes and the community more
sustainable and resilient.
Among those attending are local businesses focused on renewable
energy, locally produced foods and fair-trade products and sustainable
transportation. Campus groups, ranging from the Wisconsin Institute for
Sustainable Technology to the new student Green Fund and 350.org will be on
hand to explain some of the innovative ways UW-Stevens Point is recycling or
reusing materials and reducing the impact on the environment. Nearly 30 groups
and businesses will offer information.
“We’re
raising awareness of how diverse sustainability has become,” said Dave Barbier,
who recently became sustainability coordinator at UW- Stevens Point.
Sustainability is embraced by businesses, which recognize the economic benefits
are as important as the environmental and social benefits.
Sustainable
practices have a “triple bottom line,” he said. They maintain the integrity of
the planet, provide a service or benefit to people and are profitable.
Nationally, this day recognizes the successes, challenges and
innovation in higher education to reduce the impact we have on the planet.
