Children in local schools will learn how fresh produce is grown and distributed locally in a program offered by a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point student education organization.
“Students in the Soil,” a seminar organized and funded by the Student Wisconsin Education Association (StWEA), will be held the weeks of April 30 and May 8 for third, fourth and fifth graders at Madison Elementary School, Amherst Elementary School and St. Stephen’s Catholic School. The first session will focus on planting and caring for plants, while the second will focus on harvesting, preparing and distributing produce.
The students will take field trips to the downtown Stevens Point farmer’s market, Central Wisconsin Farmshed’s Project Greenhouse and Whitefeather Organic Farms.
UW-Stevens Point’s StWEA works with local students regularly. The group offers the Latchkey Program at Jefferson Elementary School, collects backpacks for area schoolchildren and has donated Hmong language books for use in local elementary schools.
