Social work students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will benefit
through the recent accreditation of the program through the Council on Social
Work Education Commission on Accreditation.
“This helps our students become
professionally state licensed or certified social workers, so it makes them
more employable,” said Associate Professor Amy Boelk, program director. “It
also helps them obtain their master’s degree in one year.”
Stevens Point native and
UW-Stevens Point alumna Jess Bowers has been hired to teach social work courses
and coordinate field education for the program. Her field experience includes
recent employment in child protection for the Marathon County Department of
Social Services.
Social work graduates are in
demand both locally and across the state and nation, Bowers said, driven by an
aging population, slow economic recovery, trends in substance abuse and
domestic violence. She has already been contacted by area employers looking to
hire UW-Stevens Point social work graduates.
