The educational success of local students will again be the focus
of the “Point in Common” speaker series as it begins its second year.
A collaboration of several local educational organizations, “Point
in Common” will bring author and UW-Madison Professor Harry Brighouse to
Stevens Point on Monday, Oct. 13, to discuss “Why do we Educate?” The talk will
be held at 7 p.m. at Sentry’s Theater@1800. It is free and open to the public.
“How we educate students needs to match why we educate them,” said
Brighouse, who will share how education can help students have a flourishing
life and contribute to others’ lives.
This, he says, requires considerable change in what we teach, how we teach, and
in the way all schools are organized. He will discuss
matters as technical as the best way to test students to as simple as ideal
length of school lunch breaks. His talk is intended for parents, educators and
community members.
A professor of philosophy and educational policy studies,
Brighouse teaches applied ethics, political philosophy and philosophy of
education at UW-Madison, as well as a first-year class on children, marriage
and the family. He has been a Carnegie Scholar and senior program adviser for
the Spencer Foundation. He also has written or edited several books, including
“School Choice and Social Justice,” “On Education” and, most recently, “Family
Values: The Ethics of Parent-Child Relationships.”
Another “Point in Common” talk will be held in the spring. The
series is sponsored by the Stevens Point Area Public School District, Stevens
Point Area Catholic Schools, UW-Stevens Point School of Education, Mid-State
Technical College, Sentry Insurance, Okray Family Farms, Phi Delta Kappa and
the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin.
