UW-Stevens Point among military friendly schools

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has again been recognized as one of the nation’s 2013 Military Friendly Schools® for its commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students.
For the third consecutive year, G.I. Jobs included UW-Stevens Point in the list of the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensuring their success on campus. These schools are noted for having world-class programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility and other services for those who served.

There are about 325 veterans, military students and military dependents at UW-Stevens Point, says Ann Whipp, coordinator of Veterans Services. She assists them with their benefits as well as administers and reports these benefits and acts as an adviser and counselor at times. The fact that UW-Stevens Point has a full-time person working for Veterans Services is a real positive, she added. “All I do is work with veterans so I can take more time with each person to problem solve and help them.”

“We are very proud UW-Stevens Point has been named one of America’s top military friendly schools,” saidLieutenant Colonel Gary Thompson, chair of UW-Stevens Point’s Military Science Department. “The Veterans Services coordinator does an amazing job taking care of our university vets, and the support the school provides to our ROTC program is second to none. We’re proud to call Stevens Point our home. This is a great place for anyone who has worn the uniform to transition to their next career.”

There are many other veteran advocates across campus, said Whipp, including those who work on the Veterans Advising Committee, and those planning veterans arts and history programming for next spring.  Others from the Counseling Center and elsewhere are trained for the Campus Connect program, which offers resources for students with emotional distress.

A detailed list of 2013 ”military friendly schools” will be highlighted in the annual “G.I. Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools,” and distributed in print and digital format to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October. G.I. Jobs is part of Victory Media, veteran owned and the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. Its website, www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, features interactive tools and searches to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs.
