A nationally acclaimed jazz trio will perform at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as part of the 22nd Annual Jazz Festival.
Held Friday, Feb. 1, the festival will feature a 7:30 p.m. performance by Trio M in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center. The trio with pianist Myra Melford, bassist Mark Dresser and drummer Matt Wilson will cap off the festival after a day of jazz study by more than 700 high school and middle school students from around Wisconsin.
Tickets for the Trio M concert are $15 for adults and $12 for students and are available through the Information and Tickets Office at 715-346-4100 or http://tickets.uwsp.edu. The festival is sponsored by the UW-Stevens Point Department of Music.
Trio M was formed in 2006 as an ensemble of equals with extensive jazz track records. Melford, winner of the 2012 Alpert Award in the Arts for Music, is an associate professor of contemporary improvised music at the University of California, Berkeley. Dresser, a professor at the University of California-San Diego, is a leader in collaborative Internet performances. Wilson is a Grammy Award-nominated performer who recently appeared at the White House as part of an all-star jazz group. All three compose works for the group, which has recorded two CDs.
“Nobody dominates and everyone shines,” reports AllAboutJazz.com about the trio. The Los Angeles Times called the group “a three-headed hydra of powerhouse improvisers and bandleaders,” and compared their sound to “a lively conversation among longtime friends.”
