A free two-day event that will help low-income or first-generation college-bound students apply for financial aid will be held February 23–24 at thirty-one Wisconsin locations.
The annual College Goal Wisconsin event, sponsored by the Wisconsin Association for Student Financial Aid Administrators, aims to help students complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a document required by the federal government for all students seeking loans and grants to attend and pay for college.
College Goal Wisconsin events in central and northern Wisconsin will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Mid-State Technical College, Building A, in Wisconsin Rapids, as well as at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau and the Education Center in Lac du Flambeau. The event will also be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, at Nicolet College in Rhinelander. All students who attend will have the chance to win one of several $250, $500 or $1,000 college scholarships, and a drawing will be held for one student in the state to win a laptop computer.
“Completing the FAFSA can be intimidating for many families,” said Judy Young, academic adviser and coordinator for the Upward Bound program at UW-Stevens Point. “The College Goal Wisconsin events will help current and prospective UW-Stevens Point students with this process and clear many of the hurdles faced by low-income and first-generation college students.”
Dependent students born after January 1, 1989, should have a parent or guardian along as well as completed federal income tax returns for 2012 and W-2 statements for themselves and their guardian(s). If a parent or guardian is not available, students should still bring parent/guardian tax information.
Last year’s event assisted more than 2,400 students and families, and gave out more than $11,000 in scholarships. For more information and details, go to www.collegegoalwi.org.
