Summer camps in music, studio art and video production at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point offer high school students a week-long creative, immersion experience as well as a taste of college life.

Camp COFAC, held June 22-28, is open to students entering grades 9 through 12 as well as those who have just graduated. Daily classes are taught by university faculty and are sponsored by the university’s College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) and Continuing Education program.

“We have students tell us that one week isn’t long enough,” says Jennifer Hess, an outreach specialist with UW-Stevens Point Continuing Education. “It’s great for them to get the full campus experience of staying in a residence hall, eating at the cafeteria and taking part in evening activities.”

“The students get to work on things that they couldn’t get at high school, for example the bronze casting,” said Kristin Thielking, a camp instructor and professor of art and design at UW-Stevens Point. “This is what makes our camp unique.”

A video production camp is new this summer. Students will create their own original short film by working on screenwriting, video camera operation, audio production, lighting, acting, sound effects and editing.

Music students may choose from cello, guitar, double bass, violin, viola, clarinet, bassoon, euphonium, flute, horn, oboe, percussion/drum set, piano, piccolo, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, tuba, voice and composition. Activities include daily master classes, supervised practices, warm-up exercises, group lessons, ensemble work, opera and musical theater scene workshops for vocalists and reed-fixing classes.

Studio art students will participate in daily workshops in metal casting and relief sculpture, pastel painting, assemblage sculpture, life drawing, design challenge and art history. Students will create still life paintings, create sculpture from old furniture or electronics and work with draped models.

The last day of camp includes a gallery presentation of work by studio art students, a concert by music students and a screening of original work by video production students.

Registration is now open. The music camp cost is $525, the video production camp is $575, and the studio art camp is $675. Fees include classes, meals, lodging, materials and evening social activities. Scholarships are also available.
