4/27/2016

The next generation of international leaders gathers each year as part of the National Model United Nations, sponsored by the National Collegiate Conference Association. Meet the professor and students from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point who attend this event at a free lecture in May.

“Cultivating Tomorrow’s Leaders: The Value of the Model United Nations Experience” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, presented by Mert Kartal, assistant professor of political science. Held in the Pinery Room of the Portage Country Public Library, 1001 Main Street, Stevens Point, this is the final talk in the nine-part College of Letters and Science 2015-2016 Community Lecture Series. The public may attend free of charge.

Every spring Letters and Science students represent UW-Stevens Point at this intercollegiate conference. Held in New York, more than 5,000 students from around the world simulate the United Nations’ proceedings, Kartal said. Students who participated in the event will join him. “Meet the next generation of leaders as they share their experience.”

Kartal earned bachelor’s degrees in international relations, and media and communications systems from Istanbul Bilgi University in Turkey and a master’s degree from Lund University in Sweden. He earned a master’s and doctorate degrees in political science from UW-Madison. His research interests include international relations; international organizations, compliance and domestic politics; and comparative politics, including the European Union, political conditionality, good governance and corruption.
