New Course!  Hist 313: History of Islam taught by Professor Francis.


In this class, we will examine the historical and religious development of Islam as a religion and as a force in human history from the seventh century CE to the present. In particular, we will focus on the diversity of Islamic belief and practice in a variety of historical and cultural contexts. Topics will include:
·         The development of the Sunni/Shiite split
·         Different forms of Islamic mysticism (Sufism)
·         The development and interpretation of Islamic law (Shariah), and its historical, political, and social implications.
 
This class is being submitted for approval as an Interdisciplinary course under the new General Education Program (GEP).
