English Major Portfolio Requirements

The Department of English is committed to providing its students the highest quality of education. Consequently, each fall semester we assess our program to identify any areas in which we may need to improve our efforts. At one important stage of the assessment process, we examine portfolios produced by English majors during their program of study.

To aid us in our program assessment, we ask that, as soon as possible after you have declared an English major, you begin to compile your English Major Portfolio, which, by the time it has been completed in your senior year, should contain the materials listed on the portfolio check-sheet. The completed portfolio will then be examined as part of our regular program assessment, rather than as an additional assessment of your work; consequently, be sure to allow each item to remain as it was when you first submitted it, and not return to edit it later. This will allow us to gauge your improvement during the time you have spent in the English program.

Be assured that this assessment will have no effect on your graduation prospects and the results will not appear on your record.

Procedure

When you declare an English major, we will assign you an "English Major Portfolio Folder" which we will keep on file in the Department of English office. As you compile your materials, please observe the following guidelines:

  • Use ungraded copies of work that you produced to fulfill the requirements of courses in which you have been enrolled.
  • Mark each item with the number of the category into which it fits.
  • Fill in the required information in the appropriate column on your check-sheet for your own records.
  • Make sure that you make identical entries on the check-sheet kept in your portfolio folder.
Important Note: Please do not confuse this portfolio with the portfolios required by certain English Education classes or by the application procedure for the English Education Program.
