This program is intended for currently licensed teachers seeking expertise and specialization in gifted and talented education. Students for this program must already have a teacher license/certification in another teaching area as determined by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

Recommended course sequence:
EDUC 791 – Foundations of Gifted and Talented Education (3 credits – summer)
This course includes the development, characteristics, and individual learning differences of students with gifts and talents. Overview of history and definitions Identification strategies and program options in the field of gifted/talented education. Introduction to current literature as well as exploration of relevant issues and trends. Students can take the Foundations course without being admitted to the program.
EDUC 792 – Curriculum and Methods for Teaching Students with Gifts and Talents (3 credits – fall)
This course focuses on curriculum methods designed specifically for identified students with gifts and talents in specialized programs. Curriculum differentiation and instructional strategies/techniques for students with gifts/talents in the general education classroom. Integration of cognitive/affective domains as well as creative and critical thinking skills. This course requires some pre-clinical hours. Prereq: 791 or cons instr.
EDUC 794 – Psychological Issues in Gifted Education (3 credits – spring)
This course addresses areas related to psychology and giftedness: social-emotional issues of gifted students and counseling research; and identification, assessment, and evaluation related to gifted students and gifted programs.
Tuition and Costs
We recognize that cost is essential when determining which program is best for you. Tuition, segregated fees, and a distance education fee combine to determine the program’s total cost, and each item is priced on a per-credit basis. There is an additional $25 administrative fee per semester of enrollment. For questions about tuition or more information, please reach out to Student Financial Services.
Students enrolled in an add-on licensure program are considered non-degree seeking and will not be eligible for financial aid. If students combine their Add-on licensure with the master’s in education degree, they are degree-seeking and are eligible for financial aid.

- Apply to the School of Education and submit:
- All unofficial transcripts (including transfer credits)
- Letter of Intent (1-2 pages) explaining why you are interested in teaching gifted children and pursuing this license (include the following information). *Note: Please address your letter of intent to Gifted and Talented Education coordinator.
- Your background qualifications (A brief introduction of who you are, Are you currently teaching? If so, where and in what capacity?)
- Your educational and career goals.
- Your interest in gifted and talented education.
- Your previous experiences in gifted and talented education if any.
- How this program fits into your future professional plans.
- Teaching license
- Background check – must be from the last six months.
- Once you have been accepted into the program, you will apply to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as a non-degree seeking student. If you are adding the Master’s in Education degree, then you will apply as a degree seeking student.
- Once you have been accepted into the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, you will be emailed instructions to set up your student account and register for classes.
- Upon completing the UW-Stevens Point gifted and talented add-on program, apply for your add-on licenseure/certification through the UW-Stevens Point School of Education.

The Master’s in Education degree requires 30 graduate credits, and these courses can be used to count towards your degree.
