Introduction
Youth agencies of American need over 2,000 new professionals each year. If you are motivated to work as an administrator of a youth agency or camp, or as a representative of a youth agency in the field, a major or minor in Youth Programming and Camp Management will provide you with the necessary training.
Why Study Youth Programming and Camp Management at UWSP?
The major and minor in Youth Programming and Camp Management is administered in the College of Natural Resources, widely regarded as the premier undergraduate natural resources college in the nation. Program strengths include an integrated resource management curriculum, the intern program, field-oriented instruction, small upper-level class size, intensive academic advising, summer field camp and optional field study in Germany, Australia, Costa Rica and Africa.
High School Preparation
To prepare for a major or minor in Youth Programming and Camp Management, high school students should focus on courses in biology, chemistry, and communication. Courses in psychology and sociology are also helpful.
Department Features
The Human Dimensions of Natural Resource Management discipline has 12 faculty members with Ph.D.s in various resource management disciplines, including Environmental Education, Land Use Planning, Youth Camp Management, Resource Policy and Law, Lake Management, Geography and Integrated Resource Management. Other courses are taught by faculty from the Forestry, Wildlife, Water Resources, Soil Science and Biology disciplines. Students minoring in Youth Programming and Camp Management are required to participate in a practicum at the CNR's Central Wisconsin Environmental Station.

Opportunities in this field are excellent. Salaries are moderate, and the professional must have a strong dedication to serving the needs of youth. Potential employers include: nature centers, environmental camps, outdoor adventure camps, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, YMCA, YWCA, Camp Fire Boys and Girls of America, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and Extension 4-H/youth programs. A master's degree will increase your chances of a permanent job.
